For me this was the best show Toronto has seen since Fucked Up and the Observers at Cinecycle on June 3rd, 2005.

Hardcore is great at living in the past and recognising the importance of lineage and history, but all too often we miss out on the present.

Barely anyone cared about Rorschach, Crossed Out, Heresy, Citizens Arrest, Left for Dead, and a ton of other now legendary bands when they were in their prime. You couldn’t even give No Comment records away in the UK in the 1990s.

Getting 300 people out to a glorified house show for bands that are not cool by any stretch of the imagination (fuck what you say, on a planet with a population of close to 7 billion selling 500 records is not an achievement) who are all interested in the moment is a significant accomplishment.

For me it was one of those brief times where everything suddenly made sense, like Shank at Gilman street in 2003, or Blockade at Roboto in 2010. Playing in a crammed space that “we” (the hardcore scene) owned and maintained by ourselves for ourselves.

Nothing is perfect, but that’s why we fight when it’s important. That’s why Tumblr is full of kids calling each other out over privilege, not to be annoying, but because people want to live in a better world, people want to have a separate world where they don’t have to deal with the bullshit they put up with in the one we’re all thrust into. This show wasn’t perfect, but it was important.

As a middle aged guy (trust me, i was probably older than a lot of last weeks show goers fathers) in the scene that’s been around a lot i love the fact that in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and most of the west coast of the US there are a ton of women at shows. I love that in Toronto right now there’s a noticeable contingent of young queer kids coming to shows that just don’t give a fuck about what you think. Go tour Europe and play spot the person that isn’t a 30 year old dude smoking and drinking and not really caring at all about the reason they’re at the show other the fact that they can smoke and drink there (i will never play Vienna again as long as i live). Other than a few places you will either be sorely disappointed or fit right at home (depending on what you want to see in the world).

Thanks to Iron Lung for being close friends for over a decade, thanks to S.H.I.T. for getting it and being one of the most vital bands this region has seen in a decade.

Also, this show was the first time everyone from The Endless Blockade had been in the same room together since July 3rd 2010
